5 ways to stay healthy during your family summer holiday
Are you planning a getaway with the family? Do you feel daunted by the prospect of trying to stay healthy while you’re away?
Staying healthy can be a real challenge when you’re out of your usual routine. As great as holidays are, they can throw your healthy lifestyle off track in an instant!
However, it is possible to have a great time away and avoid the after-holiday regret. Here are 5 ways you can go about it:
- Don’t stop exercising
It’s extremely important to keep your metabolism up while you are on holiday. Whether you are travelling by car or plane, or simply sitting by the pool, you’re going to be sitting around more. However, exercising every day will help your body keep burning fat and keep your blood glucose levels stable.
- Eat healthy snacks
Why do we tend to munch more when we travel? There’s something about embarking on a long trip that makes us reach for the snack box. Rather than fight the urge (who needs that pressure on holiday?), just be prepared with foods that you can eat as much as you want! Raw veggies and fruit are a great choice.
- Drink plenty of water
Travelling can cause you to dehydrate quickly. If you don’t get enough water, you can feel fatigued, have blurry vision and even have trouble concentrating. That’s no way to feel on holiday! Make sure you stay hydrated so you can enjoy yourself!
- Make sure your hotel room has a fridge and microwave
If you are at the mercy of restaurant menus for your entire holiday, you’re inevitably going to struggle to eat healthy food. However, if you have access to a fridge and microwave, you’ll be able to make some of your own healthy meals, as well as dine out.
Make sure you find a grocery store when you arrive at your holiday destination and stock up on simple, healthy foods. Then you can truly enjoy a few restaurant meals while you are away without feeling guilty!
- Get plenty of sleep
The last thing you want is to return home from your holiday feeling sleep deprived. However, sadly, many of us do because it can be difficult to adjust to sleeping while we’re away from home.
There are several things you can do to help ensure you have a better sleep while you’re away. For instance, you can:
- Play relaxing music on your iPhone
- Take your own blanket and pillow (to help you relax more quickly)
- Turn off all screens (computers, phones, iPads, televisions) 30 to 60 minutes before you go to sleep, as they can stimulate your brain
