Class of the Month: Pilates

What is it?

Pilates is a complete exercise method developed to improve physical and mental health. It focuses on building your body’s core strength and improving your posture through a series of low repetition, low impact, stretching and conditioning exercises.

Why do it?

It offers a complete body workout that doesn’t just exercise the main muscle groups, but the weaker, less used muscles too.
It enables you to achieve a toned body, realise your fitness potential and improve your posture. It’s an exercise system that’s open to all, regardless of their age or fitness level.


Quick facts:

  1. It was developed by Joseph Pilates from Germany. His father was a prize-winning gymnast and his mother, a naturopath. Joseph studied Eastern and Western forms of exercise, including yoga, before developing Pilates.
  1. It was originally called Contrology when it was first developed in the early 20th century, as Joseph intended it to be about the art of control.
  1. Celebrities swear by it and have done so for years! Madonna, Uma Thurman, Kyra Sedgwick, Christy Turlington, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Claire Danes, Molly Sims and Russell Brand are just some of the celebrities who practice it.
  1. Quality movement is fundamental to Pilates. Right from the posture, breathing and movement, through to the number of repetitions, and amount of energy that is spent – everything in Pilates needs to be done in a precise and accurate manner.
